Domain Name

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a system that translates huma n-friendly domain names (like www.google.com) into IP addresses (like 142.250.183.78) that computers use to identify websites on the internet.

Simply put, DNS acts like the "phonebook" of the internet, helping users connect to websites without remembering complex numerical IP addresses.

How Does DNS Work?

1️⃣ User enters a domain name (e.g., www.amazon.com) in a web browser.
2️⃣ DNS Resolver contacts a DNS Server to find the corresponding IP address.
3️⃣ DNS Server locates the IP address and sends it back to the user's device.
4️⃣ The browser connects to the website’s server and loads the webpage.

Types of DNS Servers:

1️⃣ Recursive DNS Resolver

  • The first server that receives the DNS request from a user's device.

  • Example: Your ISP's DNS resolver (like Google DNS 8.8.8.8).

2️⃣ Root Name Server

  • Directs the resolver to the correct Top-Level Domain (TLD) Server.

  • Example: .com, .org, .net servers.

3️⃣ TLD (Top-Level Domain) Name Server

  • Stores DNS records for specific domain extensions (like .com, .edu).

  • Example: It helps find amazon.com within .com domains.

4️⃣ Authoritative Name Server

  • The final server that provides the actual IP address of the website.

  • Example: The name server for amazon.com stores its IP address.

Common DNS Record Types:

Record TypePurpose
A RecordMaps a domain to an IPv4 address
AAAA RecordMaps a domain to an IPv6 address
CNAME RecordRedirects one domain to another
MX RecordHandles email routing for a domain
TXT RecordStores verification or authentication data

Benefits of DNS:

Makes internet browsing easy (users don’t need to remember IP addresses).
Improves website speed with caching.
Provides redundancy and security for websites.
Supports email services with MX records.

DNS vs. IP Address Access

Examples of DNS in Action:

Typing www.facebook.com in your browser automatically connects to Facebook’s IP address via DNS.
When switching web hosting, DNS records must be updated to point to the new server.
